1890 $5 Treasury Note with serial# A5460332 displaying signatures of Rosecran and Nebeker. Fr# 361. Graded 64 PPQ (Premium Paper Quality) by PCGS.

Just 18 graded by PCGS with only 3 graded higher and Only 125 known in the Census!!

This handsome note possesses near bullseye centering and sharp fresh appeal. Sure to impress for years to come. Portrait of General George H. Thomas, Union Army general famous as “the rock of Chicamauga.” His portrait was engraved by Lorenzo J. Hatch.

These notes were issued as a result of the Legal Tender Act of July 14, 1890. This Act authorized the Secretary of the Treasury to issue these notes in payment for silver bullion purchased by the Treasury Department. The entire issue of these notes thus became backed by metallic reverses.

The notes were redeemable in actual coin, but whether silver or gold coin should be paid out was left to the discretion of the Secretary of the Treasury.
