Arguably the best series of all currency notes is the large brown sealed series with an ornate reverse! Featuring below is a 1890 $1 Treasury Note Large brown seal that that displays the stunning survival Serial number A1 !

Factually this is the very first $1 bill issued for the Treasury or Coin note series which lead the pathway for all Large Brown seals ornate back Treasury Notes to follow suit .

It is also the only known Serial Number One note that existed for the 1890 One Dollar Treasury Series, as the serial numbers were run straight through all three Friedberg number changes.

These notes were issued as a result of the Legal Tender Act of July 14, 1890. This Act authorized the Secretary of the Treasury to issue these notes in payment for silver bullion purchased by the Treasury Department.

The entire issue of these notes thus became backed by metallic reverses. The notes were redeemable in actual coin, but whether silver or gold coin should be paid out was left to the discretion of the Secretary of the Treasury.
