Serial# A3708847B. Only 3 graded this high quality with just 1 graded higher by PCGS!

Signatures of Speelman/White. Fr# 282. Plate# C9/21. PCGS (premium paper quality). Deep embossing is readily seen through the PCGS holder.

Amazing detail, superb color and great margins. The portrait of Abraham Lincoln after the Matthew Brady photograph of February 9, 1864, is centered on the obverse.

The note is called a “porthole” because of the circular design around Lincoln’s head. Abraham Lincoln (February 12, 1809, April 15, 1865) was an American politician who was elected the 16th President of the United States (serving from 1861 to 1865), and was the first president from the Republican Party.

Today, he is best known for ending slavery and preserving the Union through his supervision of the Federal (i.e., Northern) forces during the American Civil War. He selected the generals and approved their strategy; selected senior civilian officials; supervised diplomacy, patronage and party operations; and rallied public opinion through messages and speeches.

Lincoln’s influence was magnified by his potently persuasive rhetoric; his Gettysburg Address became and remains a core component of the American value system.

ONLY ONE IN EXISTENCE!

Arguably the best series of all currency notes is the large brown sealed series with an ornate reverse! Featuring below is a 1890 $1 Treasury Note Large brown seal that that displays the stunning survival Serial number A1 !

Factually this is the very first $1 bill issued for the Treasury or Coin note series which lead the pathway for all Large Brown seals ornate back Treasury Notes to follow suit .

It is also the only known Serial Number One note that existed for the 1890 One Dollar Treasury Series, as the serial numbers were run straight through all three Friedberg number changes.

Displaying serial number A1 with fr# 347 and plate# A2 , showing signatures of Rosecrans and Huston. Minor restoration in one or two areas of this note has been achieved with expert skill which is understandable with a note of this significance.

The magnitude of this Serial Number One cannot be overlooked. Well margined and problem free otherwise we call this Specimen a technical grade Fine condition. Portrait of Edwin M. Stanton, Secretary of War under President Abraham Lincoln, 1862-1865, and Andrew Johnson, 1865-1868.

These notes were issued as a result of the Legal Tender Act of July 14, 1890. This Act authorized the Secretary of the Treasury to issue these notes in payment for silver bullion purchased by the Treasury Department.

The entire issue of these notes thus became backed by metallic reverses. The notes were redeemable in actual coin, but whether silver or gold coin should be paid out was left to the discretion of the Secretary of the Treasury.

$1 Original Fr. 382 The Moniteau National Bank of California, State of Missouri. Ch. # 1712, Serial # C74414/1462.

This piece is an exquisite type note which survived as part of a small run of spectacular, well embossed and vividly colored Aces. The margins are huge and the penned signatures of the president and cashier remain bold. PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ.

While PMG has certified 48 Friedberg 382’s, only two examples have merited the Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ designation, with none certified by PMG as finer.

As you may know Original Aces by far are more rare than first charters. Features two maidens before an altar, designed by T.A Liebler and engraved by Charles Burt. The reverse design features, “The Landing of the Pilgrims,” engraved by Charles Burt. Ranked No. 45 among the most beautiful examples of American Currency.

These note were issued in denominations from 1 to 1000 Dollars. The obverse bear vignettes pertaining to American History or tradition; the reverses, show some of the famous paintings on Americana that hang in the Capitol at Washington.

$1 National Bank Notes of the Original Series were first made in 1865. Other denominations had been distributed as early as December 1863. Popularly called aces, these are favorites today–the crème de la crème of large-size $1 notes.

Bills were printed on sheets of four subjects, typically $1-$1-$1-$2, the last with the “Lazy Two” design. They were made by the American Bank note Co. and National Bank Note Co. in New York City; each firm did one side. The $1 bears the American imprint on the face. Sheets were then shipped to the Treasury in Washington, DC, where Treasury serial numbers (usually in red, but sometimes in blue) and the Treasury seal were imprinted on each note.

Certain later Original series and all Series of 1875 $1 notes have bank charter numbers printed in bold red numerals. From 1865, and continuing for the next 14 years, 23,169,677 of these aces were distributed, in a ratio of about 80% Original Series and 20% Series of 1875.

The initial shipment was to the First national Bank of Akron, Ohio, on April 1, 1865. The last was sent on January 22, 1879, to the First National Bank of Warren, Rhode Island. These were Series of 1875 issues.

Dominating the face of each bill is the vignette Concordia, while on the back is the Landing of Pilgrims at the center, a state seal (representing the bank location) at the left, and a patriotic eagle to the right. On Series of 1875 bills of the same design, a vertical imprint on the left side of the face reflected that the notes were printed in Washington by the Treasury Department, with the American Bank Note Co. name on the printing plates.

Shipments of $1 and $2 National Bank bills stopped in January 1879, while higher values continued to be produced. These $1 bills are usually collected by the place of issue (by state or by towns/cities within a state). Only rarely are these or other National Bank Notes collected by signature combinations. Most Original Series bills have the Colby/Spinner names; fewer have Allison/Spinner, and only a few Jeffries/Spinner. Location, however, is the most important determinant of value.

For example, for such states as South Carolina and Wyoming, $1 National Bank bills are so rare as to be non-collectible. Those from Utah Territory, Alabama, District of Columbia, Montana Territory, West Virginia, and a few other places are quite scarce and bring strong premiums. Most plentiful are those from the Eastern states with large populations and large banking centers, including New York, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts.

For many bills, such preservations as Fair and Good are the order of the day, there being no finer known of their particular variety.

1869 $100 Legal Tender Rainbow PMG 15, rare Fr# 168 with serial# W45508 and plate D.

Issued in just one signature and seal combination, Fr 168 bears the Treasury signatures of Allison and Spinner. Although such bills may have plentiful in their time, probably mainly in bank vaults, today fewer than 30 examples total can be accounted for.

Of the 28 known notes in existence, just four are listed as Uncirculated. One resides permanently in the ANA museum, and the others are firmly settled in private collections.

None of the Uncirculated examples have appeared at auction since 1998. In 2000, one was offered in a dealer pricelist for $275,000. From 1997, only about a third of the surviving pieces have been offered for sale, though there have been no appearances since late 2007 when a PMG Extremely Fine 40 EPQ sold for $184,000 as part of the Dr. Edward and Joanne Dauer Collection.

Our piece is an attractive Fine, with a bright swath of anti-counterfeiting blue color and strong design details. Some repairs are noted by PMG, all of which were executed by a professional and are really only visible if the note is 10 x power lupe.

This rarity is No. 20 of the 100 Greatest American Currency Notes, Q. David Bowers and David M. Sundman. The face images are interesting in their juxtaposition. On the left is the late martyred Lincoln, whose election in november 1860 resulted in the formation of the Confederate States of America and, in April 1861, the Civil War–although it might have happened in other circumstances, absent Lincoln.

The portrait of Lincoln was engraved by Charles Burt from a photograph taken by Anthony Berger in Mathew A Brady’s studio on February 9, 1864. To the right is an allegorical scene titled Reconstruction, with a standing goddess as an architect of postwar recovery, with a carpenter’s square on the table before her. Seated nearby is a boy holding a scroll illustrated with a domed pergola with a circle of 12 stars around a central object, perhaps the 13th star.

Lincoln had nothing to do with the Reconstruction movement, which was necessarily begun after his death, bungled, many believe, by his successor, Andrew Johnson.

In any event, national currency motifs, which emphasized Union military figures to a fare-thee-well, did not seem to help the cause much.

The Rainbow series of 1869 is one of the most beautiful executions of paper money, not only in the United States, but also in the world. The paper itself contains a blue tint and the seals are bright red. The scroll-work and green serial numbers make its nickname self-explanatory.

Issued in the $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100 denominations collecting the full series has become a “Golden Fleece” to the collecting community.

The single pictures Washington and Columbus discovering America. The deuce contains a portrait of Thomas Jefferson and the Capitol, the five, Andrew Jackson and a Pioneer Family. The ten showed the great orator Daniel Webster and an illustration motif titled Introduction of the Old World to the New. The twenties have red behind the serial numbers, along with its engravings of Alexander Hamilton and the goddess Liberty. The twenty has the additional distinction of showing the Roman numeral XX 103 times and the Arabic 20 is employed 105 times on each note. The fifty and hundred are extremely rare with the portraits of Henry Clay/Peace and Abraham Lincoln/Architecture respectively. The hundred dollar is the most rare of all the denominations!

What an amazing superb GEM new Morgan Silver Dollar Back note with PMG commet Exceptional Paper Quality! Eye popping original notes as this one do not turn up too often.

The embossing on this particular note is tremendous, especially on a type that does not usually possess good embossing even in high grade.

PMG has graded only 70 of these with just and handful in Gem status. The inking is sharp and the paper has the sough-after Gem look and feel, perhaps the most under-rated quality in determining a note’s grade these days

Although these high denomination notes were available to anyone who wanted them, they were not, as a matter of practice, to be found in ordinary circulation. They were held mainly by banks and clearing houses and were used to settle large cash balances.

Displaying signatures of Chittenden and Spinner, Fr# 17A and plate# 28. Serial # 1 notes of this issue are VERY RARE, this being only the fifth such example to surface ( the others are from Series 7,19 20, and 126).

This Series 47 Serial Number One note is a new addition to the census.

This beauty survived in a solid VF grade with no problems except for a few minor repaired edge splits. EXCELLENT COLOR AND WELL MARGINED. The Head of Salmon P. Chase, Secretary of the Treasury under Abraham Lincoln, 1861-1864, and Chief Justice of the U.S Supreme Court, 1864-1873.

The best known to numismatist for his causing the motto “In God We Trust” to be adopted for our national coinage. Chase articulated the “slave power conspiracy” thesis well before Lincoln did, and he coined the slogan “Free Soil, Free Labor, Free Men.” He devoted his enormous energies to the destruction of what he considered the Slave Power, the conspiracy of slave owners to seize control of the federal government and block the progress of liberty.

A United States Note is a fiat paper currency that was issued directly into circulation by the United States Department of the Treasury. The notes were also known as Legal Tender Notes because of the inscription on its face stating “This Note is a Legal Tender.”

They were among the first national United States currency, authorized by the Legal Tender Act of 1862 and began circulating during the American Civil War. They preceded the National Bank Notes and Gold Certificates of 1865.

On a United States Note, the Treasury seal and the notes serial number are printed in red.
