 Most quarter eagles of the 1880s are low mintage issues, such as the 1883, with a business strike production of 1,920 coins and a proof mintage of just 82 more.While this was actually the highest proof production for the denomination in over two decades, many numismatic scholars believe that a number of the pieces were melted as unsold. As a post-1881 issue, it does not sport the coveted low mintage of previous years, yet it is much less available than the 20th century Coronet quarter eagle proofs.

This issue is subject to high date-collector pressure, owing to the extreme rarity of business strikes. NGC and PCGS have graded fewer than 50 1883 proof quarter eagles, some of which are likely resubmitted coins. Most of the certified specimens are Cameo or Ultra/Deep Cameo. |
