The $10 Indian is “the other St. Gaudens” gold coin. It is the lesser known of two coins he designed before his death in 1907. Everyone is aware of the $20 St. Gaudens, but often his name is not immediately linked the $10 Indian Eagle. The 1930-S is one of the more elusive dates of the series and was coined during the opening year of the Great Depression. Just 96,000 examples came off the coining presses of the San Francisco Mint after a 4-year hiatus of striking eagles. (The 1926 mintage of more than 1 million pieces produced a surplus and today it is one of two dates considered “common” along with the 1932).Today there are 37 pieces graded at both NGC (18) and PCGS (19) combined in Gem or finer grades.

In MS64 condition, this coin is still quite elusive and represents a great value at today’s levels for a semi-key Indian Eagle.

In all, 11 dates of the series bear the “S” mint mark and the 1930-S has the distinction of being the last $10 piece struck at the San Francisco mint.

The crowning element for this near-gem specimen is that it sports the CAC sticker signifying its rank near the top of all certified survivors in MS64 grade.
