1929 $20 PCGS MS-64

Saint Gaudens

1929 $20 PCGS MS-64At first glance looking at the official mintage figures, one would assume that this coin would fall into the “common” category. However, like many of the latter dates from the St. Gaudens series, the vast majority of the 1929 production sat in bank vaults and never circulated. Eventually they were recalled and melted after March of 1933 when President Franklin Roosevelt took the country off the Gold Standard in a desperate attempt to bring the economy out of the “Great Depression.”

Today, scarcely more than three hundred examples exist in mint-state grades and this particular coin is certainly among the upper echelon as the finest for the date are a half-dozen MS66 examples according to both major grading services.

Designed by Augustus St. Gaudens and produced during the administration of Herbert Hoover, this is one of the rarest of the rare from a series which began in 1907 and ended with the famous 1933 issue which is today, the most valuable coin in the world.

A rare opportunity to own a museum-quality example of a classic American coin and one considered the most beautiful of all the world’s coins.
