“Changing The Landscape of Numismatic Trading”

1922-S $20 NGC MS-65

Saint Gaudens

1922-S $20 NGC MS-65

At first glance looking at the official mintage figures of 2,658,000 pieces, one would assume that this coin would fall into the “common” category.

However, like many dates from the St. Gaudens series, the vast majority of the 1922 San Francisco production sat in bank vaults and never circulated. Eventually they were recalled and melted after March of 1933 when President Franklin Roosevelt took the country off the Gold Standard in a desperate attempt to bring the economy out of the “Great Depression.”

In 1983, a hoard of approximately 7,000 pieces was discovered in Central America, but most coins were of inferior quality. As a result, even though there are over 1,500 mint state examples now listed in the population reports of the two major services, only 21 are graded MS65 and only 5 higher, all MS66.

Designed by Augustus St. Gaudens and produced during the shortened administration of Warren Harding, this is one of the rarest of the rare from a series which began in 1907 and ended with the famous 1933 issue which is today, the most valuable coin in the world.

This is a rare opportunity to own a museum-quality, penultimate example of a classic American coin and one considered the most beautiful of all the world’s coins.
