1907 Liberty $20 NGC PR-65 Star ex. Pittman

Star Designation - From the Pittman Collection

1907 Liberty $20 NGC PR-65 Star This was a transitional year for the double eagle, with the Liberty design used for most of the year at all three operating mints.

After a run of 57 years, the Philadelphia Mint retired the Liberty design from the double eagle in 1907 without much fanfare given to the collector market.

On the contrary, the excitement created by the new Saint-Gaudens design may have actually lessened the already limited demand for proofs.

Although a few experimental pieces of the new Saint-Gaudens piece were produced early in the year, the High Relief design was not coined until November 1907.

Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Mint produced 1.4 million business strike Liberty double eagles but only a mere 78 proofs.

Population data would suggest that 45 to 55 specimens survive as identifiable proofs.
