1861 $10 NGC PF-65 Cameo
Civil War Proof Gold |
While the business strikes of this year may be one of the more frequently encountered dates in the series, proof 1861 Eagles are rarities of the highest order.
Only 69 proofs were originally struck, and the attrition rate was very high for this issue. It has been reliably estimated that perhaps as few as a dozen proofs remain today. As you will see from even a casual review of auction records, this date virtually never crosses the block, and any opportunity to own one may only come once in a decade. Cameo example are even harder to find, as during this time, the Mint did not specially prepare the dies to produce a high contrast, preferring instead to produce brilliant proofs. Many experts beleive that the cameo examples from all civil war era proof gold are the result of early strike from fresh dies, making this one of the first 1861 proofs struck. A gem for the Proof Gold collector |
