 Given the mintage of only 9100 coins, the 1859-O double eagle has been characterized as the 4th rarest of the New Orleans double eagles.
The 1859-O double eagle is a very scarce issue in all grades. It is most often seen in Very Fine to Extremely Fine grades and it is rare in About Uncirculated. Most pieces in this grade range are no better than AU53, and the 1859-O becomes very rare in properly graded AU55. This is a coin that is currently in extremely high demand as many advanced collectors lack an 1859-O. On October 18th, 1865, the S.S. Republic left on what would be her final voyage. En route to New Orleans from New York, the S.S. Republic sank off the coast of Georgia after encountering a hurricane. The storm claimed both the ship and over a dozen of her passengers who died on lifeboats awaiting rescue. When the S.S. Republic sank , it was rumored that she was carrying $400,000 worth of gold and silver .
Under the direction of Odyessy Marine, recovery efforts began in late 2003, and many of the gold and silver coins were discovered … and have survived in amazing condition! Some of the coins aboard the SS Republic had been freshly minted shortly before departure and many still look as pristine as the day they left the mint. Among these coins were Type I $20 Liberty Head gold coins, $10 Liberty (or Coronet Head) gold coin, and silver Seated Liberty Half Dollars. |
