 The 1854-O Liberty Double Eagle is one of the most important rarities in U.S. numismatics. The 1854-O -s the second rarest New Orleans Mint Double Eagle (Only behind the 1856-O) with a mere 3,250 coins struck.
The number of auction appearances in recent years may have led some experts to over-estimate the number of 1854-O Double Eagles that survive. The best estimate is between 25-35 ( with many examples in the pop reports and auction records being duplicates of the same coins. There are no 1854-O Double Eagles that grade MS-60 or higher, with only a handful of AU specimens available. As such demand for properly graded 54-O’s is intense. The Type 1 (or No Motto) double eagles were struck at the Philadelphia Mint every year from 1850 through 1865, but at the New Orleans Mint only from 1850 through 1861.
These early twenties range from elusive to very rare and Branch mint pieces are particularly so, with many New Orleans issues numbered among the great rarities of the series. The ownership of an attractive 1854-O is considered a hallmark of a truly important collection of Double Eagles |
