This coin goes well beyond what most collectors have ever seen and I would truly advise anyone with a practiced eye to view and enjoy this coin. Nearly the finest known (there is a 66) but without question one of the Finest Seen!

The early Mint designer, Robert Scot (one t) made his original adaptations of the Great Seal of the United States in 1796 for the Quarter Eagles. It followed that a few years later he would use that basic design to improve and “professionalize” the large coinage of the Country, in this case the Bust Dollars. This brought us to the Heraldic Eagle design that has been castigated as “Tasteless Military Brag” or as a “Heroic” design depending on your taste.

In any case this basic reverse was used on Eagles, Half Eagles, dismes, half dismes, Dollars and Halves, basically the whole gamut of coins produced by our mint.

The processes of the Mint in the early days were quite primitive and the dies did not last long. What that has given us is a huge number of nearly unique variations on a general theme.

If you study the Bolender Book (a dense tome to be sure) you will come away with a blizzard of differing types of varieties for each year that these coins were minted (1798 to 1804, yes I know no regular ones were dated in 1804 but they were produced that year anyway, just dated 1803).

In 1799 alone, some 11 different Obverse dies and 17 different Reverse dies were combined to produce 23 varieties. This is a numismatists dream, variation upon variation. For the less collector minded of us, the major varieties of each date will suffice and give great enjoyment.

The collection and investment in the Early Dollar Varieties is quite a rewarding venture and to own a piece of the earliest history of the United States as represented in our coinage is a great pleasure.

This unparalleled specimen is one of the finest Bust Dollar by grade for the date (with the exception noted above) but the real story here is that it is one of the finest for the entire type.

Major Auctions come and go (like buses nowadays) and have realized sales into the high multi-millions without a coin near this fine presented to the buyers. There are less than a half a dozen coins of any date in the Heraldic Eagle design in grades finer than this and less than two dozen to match it.

The First Coin of the Newly United 13 Colonies!

Monumental efforts on the part of truly exceptional men led to the Declaration of Independence in July of 1776. As part of establishing a new and sovereign country, one of the first items to be addressed was the production of coinage. Aside from the obvious purposes of facilitating commerce, official coinage makes a statement to the world that the nation has substance and is a force to be reckoned with.

While still engaging the British in battle on their own turf, the new patriots were also struggling to establish laws and principals by which the newly united former colonies could live with each other and with the world. There was plenty of money circulating at the time; mainly British and Spanish in origin, but the Continental Congress had already authorized the printing of its own paper money which was intended to be an interim measure until coinage could be produced. They were essentially promissory notes which could later be redeemed for coin (“real money”).

The founding fathers had negotiated for a substantial loan of silver bullion from the French in order to create the coinage and while it was believed the metal was on its way, designs were commissioned for the new coinage and “prototype’ coins were created from available metals such as copper, tin (incorrectly referred to as pewter) and a very few in silver.

The designs were similar to those already on the paper money which were heavily influenced by sketches submitted by Benjamin Franklin. The “We Are One” motif surrounded by 13 conjoined links each with the name of one of the United Colonies was employed on the reverse. The obverse featured a sundial and blazing sun which was inspired by the Masonic Lodges to which Franklin and many others belonged and actually dates back to medieval Tarot decks.

For an unfortunate variety of reasons, the anticipated bullion never arrived and all that remains today are the prototypes (sometimes called patterns). Most of these are tin (also called pewter); slightly more than a dozen are brass and a very few are silver.

There are different varieties of each and all are considered rare by any measure or standard. The present piece is one of the finest known and thus is exceedingly rare. There is only 1 coin graded MS65 with one higher (an incredible MS67 by NGC!).

It is obvious that these tremendous artifacts saw extensive circulation and most certainly were accepted in commerce for at least a time. This is truly a precious piece of Americana and deserves a place in the finest of collections or perhaps will someday find a home in a museum amongst other relics of the early days of the United States of America. It’s importance can hardly be overstated!

Demand for 1794 Dollars is always high

Coin Collectors have pursued the 1794 silver dollar from the earliest days of the hobby. An example of this date was featured in the first all coin auction sale held in this country, the Roper Sale (M. Thomas and Sons, 2/1851), lot 22, item number 4.

The allure and charisma of the issue cannot be overstated, and many collectors sometimes opt for this date over the much less expensive 1795 dollar when forming a type set. Of course, no collection of early silver dollars can be complete without this premier date. Its status as a first-date-of-issue is another inducement for advanced collectors to acquire this date.
