With the advent of Registry sets and the huge base of Morgan Dollar collectors attempting to put together complete sets, both Demand and prices for the limited number of 1893-S Gem examples remains (and will continue to remain) very strong.
The Morgan dollar’s story is a Cinderella tale: Until the 1960s, it was largely ignored by the public. Since then, it has gradually become among the most widely pursued and desired of all U. S. coins.Although many collectors find the challenge of assembling a complete date and mintmark set in Mint State compelling, others satisfy themselves with collecting just one coin per year. Exceptional specimens are also sought after by type collectors.

Morgan’s obverse features a left-facing portrait of Miss Liberty. The reverse depicts a somewhat scrawny eagle which led some to vilify the coin as a “buzzard dollar.” The designer’s initial M appears on both sides—a first.

Unfortunately, many of the surviving pieces are impaired through careless handling and/or crude attempts at cleaning. In 1895, the purchasing of “proof sets” directly from the Philadelphia Mint had become an annual ritual for several hundred American coin collectors. A mere 880 proof sets with the Silver Dollar were sold in 1895.Besides the annual issue of Proofs, most coin collectors at the time routinely ignored the regular issue coins. It was not until the 1950s and 1960s when collectors started to seek out examples of each mint’s products for each respective date did it become apparent that none of the 12,000 1895 Philadelphia Mint Dollars reportedly struck for circulation could be found. Not a single verifiable example could be located.

As such the collector demand for the 1895 Morgan Dollar has never fallen and can only be filled by finding one of the few hundred Proofs minted that year.

Gem or better examples such as this Proof-68 Cameo are very rare and highly sought, thus commanding premiums when they do become available .

The 1895 remains underrated in general, yet immensely popular with series enthusiasts.

Original Mintage Only 880 Coins

Background Info

The Philadelphia Mint delivered 12,000 business strike Morgan dollars in 1895–at least that’s what the official government records say. To date, collectors have failed to confirm the existence of a single business strike 1895-P Morgan dollar. Although well known to specialists, we repeat here two of the more popular theories surrounding this fantastic business strike issue:

The 12,000 coins reported in the Philadelphia Mint ledger could have represented the last of the 1894-dated coins delivered to the chief coiner.

Twelve bags of business strike 1895 dollars could have been produced, yet retained in federal vaults until they were destroyed by melting, after passage of the Pittman Act in 1918.

While recent research has deepened the mystery, it has failed to completely put to rest any of the current theories . Perhaps we will never know whether the Philadelphia Mint produced business strike dollars in 1895 or, if it did, what happened to all of them. What we do know for certain is that every Morgan dollar specialists must acquire a survivor of the 880-piece proof delivery, creating enormous demand for this date.
